Heritage Arts Exhibit on Display in Colebrook
COLEBROOK – Learn about dog sledding, blacksmithing, contra dancing and more, at a traveling exhibit that celebrates some of the music and craft traditions of New Hampshire is on display at the Great North Woods Interpretive Center in Colebrook. “Discovering Heritage Arts in New Hampshire” will be up in the interpretive center, located in the Welcome Center on Route 3, through September, 2009. The exhibit, which will be open during the Welcome Center’s regular hours, is drawn from educational activities on the New Hampshire Folklife Web site (www.nh.gov/folklife).

The Colebrook display is made possible by support from the Great North Woods Committee for the Arts, and is hosted by the Friends of the Great North Woods Welcome Center. The Folklife Web site is an educational resource developed by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts’ Traditional Arts Program.

United We Serve Launches This Week
President Obama’s new initiative to encourage volunteerism and support economic recovery launched on Tuesday. The N.H. State Council on the Arts joins the NEA and the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies in urging artists and arts organizations to participate. This is a terrific opportunity not just to help out the community but to raise the profile of the arts as part of community revitalization.

You can find more information at the NASAA Web site and at Serve.gov. Logos, banners and other communications tools are all available for download. A national database is being developed to showcase volunteer success stories from across the nation. Please share stories of volunteer arts projects that have transformed lives, galvanized community action or assisted populations in need. The stories are being posted on the White House Delivering Change map. A Media Advisory Guide and sample press release are available to help you get the word out about your volunteer activities and opportunities.

We ask you to share your stories with the State Arts Council, too, as well as your volunteer opportunities, by e-mailing Programs Information Officer Jane Eklund at jane.eklund@dcr.nh.gov. We’ll gather them and help you get the word out.

Judi Calhoun named Artist Innovator
Judi Calhoun, an author and artist from Colebrook, received MicroCredit-NH’s Artist Innovation Award at the first North County Artist Exchange in Whitefield. Judi has authored two children’s books – “Mrs. Honeywell and the Bear” and “The Sword of Yesher” – and has conducted art classes throughout the North Country. A member of the LINKS (Leaders in Northern Kreative Solutions) MicroCredit-NH business group in Colebrook, Judi has turned her artwork into a full-time business, JAC Art.
